Shifting from Acclaim to Rage: Conservative Response to Epstein File Release is Divided.

Right-leaning responses to the partial release of files related to the Epstein case have been sharply divided, with some supporters of the former Trump administration pointing out the noticeable presence of former President Clinton and other Democratic figures in photographs, while different voices expressed frustration over how heavy censorship cast Donald Trump and Republicans in a negative manner.

Justice Department Defends Censorship with Fervent Hyperbole

Administration representatives defended the heavily censored sections with intense hyperbole. “Never in American the nation's history has a President or the Justice Department been so transparent with the public about such a delicate law enforcement issue,” declared Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who issued a detailed memo outlining the redaction process.

Concerns Prompted by Blacked-Out Sections

While the former president's name and image are visible in portions of the materials, the widespread black blocks prompt significant questions about what may be concealed behind them. A number of conservative lawmakers immediately called for greater openness.

“The public are furious and walking away,” posted Georgia Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.

Via a online statement, GOP Kentucky Thomas Massie said the censorship violate the law, and suggested that a future Congress may attempt to remove the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Unfortunately, this file dump grossly does not adhere to both the intent and the letter of the law,” he continued.

Some Conservative Commentators Rally In Support of the Disclosure

But, a segment of conservative pundits and Trump loyalists came out strongly in support of the administration.

The release—originating from a justice department run by close Trump associate Pam Bondi—includes scores of pages that are completely censored, and many of the individuals shown in pictures have their faces blacked out.

But a few are not, including prominent individuals like Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The presence of Clinton, especially, allowed some conservative figures to go on the attack.

“This is pretty ironic how the political left wrongly claimed President Trump of associating with a pedophile, only for the administration's Justice Department to unveil Epstein files that show Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a pedophile,” wrote right-wing commentator Laura Loomer.

“New documents show Bill Clinton shirtless in a jacuzzi with a woman that is not his spouse Hillary Clinton,” posted attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only one reason Epstein would photograph a US President with a young woman in a hot tub: Blackmail.”

Clinton Spokesperson Issues Statement

Clinton has repeatedly said he was aware of zero criminal actions by Epstein and has not been alleged to have participated in any wrongdoing. “The White House hasn’t been concealing these files for an extended period only to dump them at the last minute on a Friday to protect Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s representative Angel Ureña stated in a comment.

“This is about shielding officials from what comes next, or from information they will try and conceal permanently. So they can release as many grainy decades-old photos as they want, but this isn’t about Bill Clinton. Never has, never will be,” the response concluded.

Broader Rightwing Comment Remains Muted

Nonetheless, overall discourse on the political right was relatively subdued following the disclosure, especially when compared with the vociferous demands for transparency that came before the legislative vote to enact a law mandating the files' release.

Loomer, who not long ago accepted press credentials at the Defense Department, had been one of the most vocal proponents for a complete disclosure. Earlier this year, she chastised the administration generally and Bondi in particular after a group of rightwing personalities were provided hard-copy binders of materials that contained little previously unseen information.
