RAF Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside France's air force in a coordinated attack against an subterranean weapons facility in Syria employed by the Islamic State group (IS), as stated by the UK Ministry of Defence.

The site, identified by intelligence, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was located in hills just above the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our fighter planes employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a series of access tunnels down to the depot... initial indications suggest the strike was effective," officials stated.

There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the operation late on Saturday and all the aircraft made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - referred to as Daesh - established extremist governance over parts of both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This action shows British leadership, and resolve to work closely with our partners, to eradicate any revival of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary said.

UK warplanes have carried out overwatch operations over Syria to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of Islamic State after its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the authorities noted.

"I extend gratitude to the personnel of our armed forces who took part in this operation for their expertise and their courage," he added. "They were part of numerous British troops stationed over the festive period. This operation, to remove militants who endanger our security, highlights how UK forces are ready to step up, throughout the year, ensuring Britain's security domestically and strong abroad."

In December, the United States armed forces conducted what it termed a "large-scale strike" on Islamic State objectives in the country, following an assault resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. estimates Daesh still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in Syria and Iraq.
