A group of seven alleged members of Germany's left-wing extremist group stand trial over multiple violent incidents

A group of seven people accused of being the left-wing extremist organization Antifa Ost began their trial on Tuesday, facing charges for violent actions against rightwing extremists that earned them the moniker “Hammer Gang”.

Global terrorist designation and legal charges

Earlier this month, the US government classified Antifa Ost as a terrorist organization together with several other left-wing extremist and anarchist groups.

German prosecutors claim the network was behind attacks on locations in the country and Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Among the incidents is the multiple attacks of a business proprietor in Thuringia, whose establishment was known as a meeting point for rightwing activists.

Some suspects are allegedly accused of using hammers against suspected far-right members, causing several with serious injuries.

Court proceedings and cross-border allegations

The trial involving seven defendants is scheduled to continue until mid-2026 in the city of Dresden. A pair of suspects, named as Johann G and Paul M., also face charges for violent incidents in the Hungarian capital during early 2023, coinciding with an annual event called the “day of honour” that draws rightwing extremists from throughout the continent.

Separately, a different German individual, Maja T., is currently on trial in Hungary for multiple charges of attempted violent acts against neo-Nazis prior to the identical event in 2023.

Regional context and group hierarchy

The former East Germany has historically served as a breeding ground for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigration youth groups, as well as the frequently radical anti-fascist networks that counter them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G. as a high-ranking member within the organization, responsible for planning attacks and bringing in new members.

Together with Paul M, he is accused of organizing training sessions where leftwing extremists practised combat techniques and simulated violent actions. In storage facilities overseen by the suspect, the network allegedly accumulated hammers, irritant sprays, disguises and mobile phones.

Prior legal cases and global responses

Another militant previously active with the organization, Lina E, became a symbolic figure within certain radical left communities following her conviction in 2023 for targeting presumed far-right targets.

The US designation renders organization affiliates ineligible to enter the United States, blocks financial holdings they may have within the American economy and makes it illegal offering assistance to them.

The German right-wing AfD party welcomed the American move and urged the German administration to take similar action. However, the German foreign ministry simply stated it had “acknowledged” of the US designation.

“The threat from the [Antifa Ost] group has substantially diminished lately. Key leaders and most aggressive participants have already been convicted or are in custody.”
